General description

PVP has biocompatibility, low toxicity, adhesive characteristics, complexing stability, relatively inert behavior, and is resistant to thermal degradation. It is readily prepared by the polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone or by Reppe synthesis technique.[1]

Application

PVP is one of the constituents used in the synthesis and coating of silver nanocubes.[2][3] It serves as a reducing agent[4] and colloidal stabilizer[5] in the synthesis of palladium nanobars,[6][5] triangular,nanoplates,[7]twinned nanorods and bipyramids.[8] It is also used as a capping agent in the synthesis of silver nanospheres, gold nanoframes.[9] General applications of PVP are: in pharmaceutical, food, beverage, cosmetic, toiletry and photographic industries.[1]

Other Notes

Polyvinylpyrrolidone is a component of Denhardt′s Solution and is included at a concentration of 1% (w/v) in the standard 50X stock solution.

Transdermal drug delivery represents an appealing alternative to conventional drug administration systems. In fact, due to their high patient compliance, the development of dissolvable and biodegradable polymer microneedles has recently attracted great attention.
