While similar in sequence and structure to DNA cytosine methyltransferases, this gene is distinct and highly conserved in its function among taxa. DNA methyltransferase 2 (DNMT2) might be involved in de novo methylation of newly integrated retroviral DNA in mammalian DNA. DNMT2 functions as a tRNA methyltransferase in lower eukaryotes. DNMT2 plays an essential role in zebrafish development by enhancing cytoplasmic RNA methylation. DNMT2 promotes DNA methylation in Drosophila.
