生化/生理作用
胱抑素-C前体（CST3）是溶酶体半胱氨酸蛋白酶和几种组织蛋白酶（如组织蛋白酶S，一种溶酶体酶）的抑制剂。已显示CST3是肾小球滤过和糖尿病肾病的标志物。在存在病理条件的情况下，它会在脑动脉中形成淀粉样原纤维。编码CST3的基因中的突变已被证明与淀粉样变性和年龄相关性黄斑变性的一种形式有关。
胱抑素C（CysC）由所有有核细胞释放。甲状腺功能异常，免疫抑制治疗和全身性炎症改变了CysC的水平。编码CysC的基因突变会导致遗传性胱抑素C淀粉样血管病，这是大脑中含有CysC变体的淀粉样蛋白沉积物的结果。
