The ATP binding cassette subfamily A member 7 (ABCA7) gene, spanning ~32kb with 46 exons, is mapped to human chromosome 19p13.3. The gene codes for a member of ABCA subclass of ABC transporters. ABCA7 protein is mainly expressed in human leukocytes and thymus, spleen, bone marrow and in the brain.

ATP binding cassette subfamily A member 7 (ABCA7) has been involved in developmental specification of hematopoietic cell lineages. The encoded protein plays a vital role in regulation of lipid transport in brain. In addition, it also regulates cellular phospholipid homeostasis by interacting with apolipoprotein I (apoA-I). Loss-of-function mutation in ABCA7 increases the risk of susceptibility to Alzheimer′s disease (AD).
