Solute carrier family 8 member B1 (SLC8B1) functions as a mitochondrial sodium calcium exchanger and is implicated in maintaining cellular Ca²⁺ homeostasis in diverse tissues and cell types. The encoded protein regulates Ca²⁺ induced NAD(P)H production and matrix redox state by controlling the mitochondrial Ca²⁺ elevations. SLC8B1 also plays an essential role in regulating automaticity of the HL-1 cardiomyocytes by controlling sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca²⁺ handling .
