Synuclein alpha (SNCA) is expressed in the central nervous system, which includes astrocytes, neurons, oligodendroglia and microglia. The gene is located on human chromosome 4q22.1. It is a small protein containing 140 amino acids.

Synuclein alpha (SNCA) aids brain fatty acid metabolism, dopamine biosynthesis, dopamine transporter modulation, chaperone activity and regulation of inflammatory response. The protein inhibits phospholipase D2. It is considered as a biomarker for group 4 medulloblastomas. It has the capacity to inhibit tumor invasion and induce apoptosis. Aggregation of SNCA in central nervous system is associated with Lewy body dementia (LBD) and Parkinson′s disease(PD). The protein may be involved in neurotransmitter release and vesicle turnover at the presynaptic terminals.
