HEYL (Hairy/enhancer-of-split related with YRPW motif-like protein) gene encodes a protein belonging to the hairy and enhancer of split-related (HESR) family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)-type transcription factors. These factors regulate the function of certain GATA-proteins and inhibit cardiac gene expression in a signal-dependent manner. It may function as a downstream effector of Notch signaling that is required for cardiovascular development.
