一般描述
铁蛋白包含24个亚基，属于铁蛋白样双铁羧酸蛋白质超家族。铁蛋白由重链(H)和轻链(L)亚基组成。肝铁蛋白主要由轻链亚基组成，脾为重链。轻链亚基定位于人染色体9q13.33， 重链为11q12.3。
应用
人肝脏铁蛋白已用作体积排阻高效液相色谱中的蛋白模型，并用于合成纳米孔转位研究。还用于检测其对虾（凡纳滨对虾/Litopenaeus vannamei）的白斑综合征病毒易感性的影响。
生化/生理作用
广泛的储铁蛋白在铁代谢中起关键作用。其用作细胞内的铁储备（特别是在脾脏、肝脏、肠粘膜和骨髓中）并参与铁解毒。 研究表明，铁蛋白铁的掺入是由与铁蛋白 H 亚基相关的铁氧化酶活性和与铁蛋白 L 亚基相关的成核中心介导的。 从铁蛋白释放铁在铁依赖性脂质过氧化中具有重要作用，并且可能在体内促成自由基诱导的细胞损伤。因此，通过结合铁，铁蛋白可以起抗氧化剂的作用。
铁蛋白是宿主防御体系的一部分，在动物的抗病毒感染应答中起作用。铁蛋白的异常水平与前列腺、乳腺和大脑等多个部位的肿瘤有关。炎症和巨噬细胞活化综合征(MAS)会导致铁蛋白浓度升高。轻链亚基突变会导致神经退行性疾病、遗传性铁蛋白病。
