细胞色素c氧化酶是全部动物，植物，酵母菌和某些细菌有氧代谢中高氧亲和力的主要末端氧化酶。 它存在于高度发育的细胞的线粒体和细菌的细胞质膜中。细胞色素c氧化酶催化电子从细胞色素c转移到O2。这种电子转移过程会在整个膜上产生质子梯度，进而驱动ATP的产生。这种酶在通过将通过细胞色素链的电子传输与氧化磷酸化过程耦合为细胞提供能量方面是独特的。
