生化/生理作用
在细胞内，细胞色素c可在亚铁态和三价铁态之间迅速转化，这使其成为有效的生物电子转运体。它在动植物的细胞氧化过程中发挥重要作用。它通常被视作呼吸作用的通用催化剂，可在呼吸底物与氧气之间形成必要的电子桥。
细胞色素C是氧化磷酸化的重要介质，介导呼吸链复合体III和复合体IV之间的电子传递。
细胞色素C也是凋亡通路的重要介质。线粒体细胞色素c释放，进入细胞质，激发细胞凋亡，通常被作为细胞凋亡过程的指示剂。研究表明，重楼皂苷I(PS I)对于人胃癌细胞生长（SGC7901细胞）的影响是使细胞质内细胞色素c水平升高。结果是，细胞色素诱导线粒体依赖性细胞凋亡，抑制SGC7901细胞增生。
