用邻菲罗啉二钠盐水合物测定铁以确定铁在生物样品中的溶解度。它曾作为铁螯合剂用于种植不含 Fe-EDTA（乙二胺四乙酸）的植物。
生化/生理作用
邻菲罗啉二磺酸是一种金属螯合剂。可在水介质中进行铁测定，无需进行溶剂萃取。它与 Fe 2+ 形成复合物，并使其不能被 Fe 2+ 转运蛋白利用，从而抑制铁进入叶绿体的转运。邻菲罗啉二磺酸也用于测定细胞内谷胱甘肽。
