一般描述
Human serum albumin (HSA) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 4. Albumin is a globular protein with 585 amino acids. It is the most prominent protein in human sera. Albumin constitutes total concentration of about 60% of the total proteins in the blood serum. The encoded protein contains three globular domains that resemble each other in structure, each containing two subdomains. Albumins are soluble monomeric proteins found in the body fluids and tissues of animals and in some plant seeds.

Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids and thyroid hormones. Serum albumins are also vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood. This globular protein is broadly used to treat serious burn injuries, hemorrhagic shock, hypoproteinemia, fetal erythroblastosis and ascites caused by liver cirrhosis. HSA has various biological applications, such as carrier of oxygen, nanodelivery of drugs and fusion of peptides.
