General description
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) exists in three anhydrous crystalline polymorphic forms: trigonal(calcite), rhombic aragonite and hexagonal vaterite. On crystallization from water at low temperatures it affords rhombohedral calcium carbonate hexahydrate. On thermal decomposition it affords CaO and CO2. CaCO3 is a mineral found abundantly in mussel shells, exoskeleton of chorals and algae, the carapace of crayfish and lobsters. Its μm sized crystals have industrial importance.
Application
Calcium carbonate was used in the synthesis of hybrids of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles.
