表皮生长因子（EGF）是EGF家族的创始成员，该家族还包括TGFα、双调节蛋白(AR)、β -细胞蛋白(BTC)、表调节蛋白(EPR)、肝素结合EGF样生长因子(HB-EGF)、表原和神经调节蛋白(NRG)1-6。EGF是一种有效的生长因子，可刺激各种表皮和上皮细胞的增殖。另外，EGF已表现出抑制胃分泌并参与伤口愈合的作用。EGF通过称为c-erbB的受体发出信号，该受体是I 类酪氨酸激酶受体。该受体还与TGF-α和VGF（痘苗病毒生长因子）结合。重组人EGF是一种 6.2kDa 球状蛋白，含有53个氨基酸残基，包括 3个分子内二硫键。
