General description
C6-NBD Phytosphingosine is a fluorescent derivative of phytosphingosine (PHS). Its fluorescent property is due to presence of NBD (2-(4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-7-yl) aminoethyl) group.
Application
C6-NBD Phytosphingosine or N-[6-[(7-nitro-2-1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl)amino]hexanoyl]-phytosphingosine is suitable for use in membrane fusion and verification studies using forster resonance energy transfer (FRET).
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phytosphingosine (PHS) is a long-chain base sphingoid and a major constituent of various phytoceramides. PHS is abundantly present in skin, intestine, and kidneys of animals. It exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. PHS is known to increase the expression of genes including transglutaminase 1 and involucrin, that are involved in keratinocyte differentiation in humans.
