It may also be used as an organocatalyst in the cross-aldol reaction of dihydroxyacetone with p-nitrobenzaldehyde to form the corresponding polyol. SMP reacts with benzoylformic acid to form (S)-N-benzoylformyl-2-(methoxymethyl)-pyrrolidine.
