Application

Luminol sodium salt has been used:

  • as a component of MEBSS buffer in a bioluminescence assay to detect peroxidase activity in whole blood samples[1]
  • to study protein interaction in whole-cell lysates by immunoprecipitation[2]
  • for in vitro reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantification in CD45+ and CD45− cells[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Luminol is a redox-sensitive chemiluminescent compound.[4][5] It emits blue luminescence when the basic aqueous solution of luminol having oxygen atoms come in contact with oxidizing agents like potassium ferricyanide.[4] It is highly stable and is applicable in various fields such as analytical chemistry, metallurgy, biochemistry, and forensics for detecting reactive species.[5] Luminol has the potential to detect defects in neutrophils ex vivo during oxidative metabolism defects such as chronic granulomatous disease and myeloperoxidase deficiency.[5]
