General description

Chemical structure: aminoglycoside

Application

Paromomycin, monomycin, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to select genetically transformed plants and plant cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Paromomycin inhibits the initiation and elongation steps of protein synthesis by binding to 16S ribosomal RNA. Paramomycin binds to the A site, which causes defective polypeptide chains to be produced and leads to cell death.

Leishmaniasis broadly manifests as visceral leishmaniasis (VL), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL). The treatment of VL is challenging. The duration of treatment is long, and drugs are toxic thereby needing monitoring and hospitalization. Novel therapies such as single
