Gene Information

human ... KCNN1(3780)

General description

KCNN1 (SK1) codes for a voltage-independent, calcium-activated channel integral membrane protein. This protein belongs to potassium channel family. Mouse SK1 protein can interact with calmodulin without the aid of Ca2+ ions.
Rabbit Anti-KCNN1 antibody recognizes human and bovine KCNN1.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide directed towards the C terminal region of human KCNN1

Application

Rabbit Anti-KCNN1 antibody is suitable for western blot applications at a concentration of 1.25 μg/ml.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and may have profound consequences for the firing pattern of the neuron. Each component of the AHP is kinetically distinct and is mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels. The protein encoded by this gene is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and is thought to regulate neuronal excitability by contributing to the slow component of synaptic AHP. The encoded protein is an integral membrane protein that forms a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three other calmodulin-binding subunits. KCNN1 is a member of the KCNN family of potassium channels.

Small conductance calcium-gated K(+) channels (SK channels) are encoded by the three SK genes, SK1, SK2, and SK3. These channels likely contribute to slow synaptic afterhyperpolarizations of apamin-sensitive and apamin-insensitive types. SK channels are also widely expressed outside the nervous
