Application

Calf Serum has been used as a component in α-minimum essential medium (α-MEM) to grow MLO-Y4 (osteocyte cell line) cells. It has also been used to wash the blood cells of a male corn snake and a chicken to determine the genome size corn snake genome size.

General description

The animal serum is generally used as a supplement in basal media formulations for the optimal growth of various cell types in vitro. Iron-fortified bovine calf serum (IF-BCS) is obtained from 4 - 6 months old formula-fed calves. IF-BCS is preferred as a cost-effective substitute for fetal bovine serum (FBS) in several applications.
