General description

Folic acid belongs to vitamin B group and is also called as vitamin B9 or folate. It is present as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in humans. Grains, fruits and vegetables are dietary sources of folate. Pteroylmonoglutamate is a synthetic folate which comprises single glutamate and exists in the oxidized state.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Folic acid is essential for cell growth, brain functioning and plays a key role on serine production from glycine. It also coordinates with vitamin B12 in maintaining iron levels. Deficiency of folate is implicated in megaloblastic anemia. Folic acid aids in the repair and synthesis of DNA. Dietary supplementation and fortification of folate in foods is recommended for pregnant women especially in the first trimester to avoid congenital malformation and neural tube defects (NTDs). However, folate fortification may also impose a moderate risk of developing prostate cancer. Supplementation of folate to colon cancer cells diminishes iron levels and impairs the cell division.

Folate and vitamin B-12 are important for growth. Many children in low- and middle-income countries have inadequate intakes of these nutrients. We undertook a randomized, placebo controlled double-blind trial in 1000 North Indian children, 6 to 35 months of age

The objective was to study folate production of yeast strains, bacteria isolated from oat bran, and selected lactic acid bacteria as well as one propionibacterium in oat and barley based models. Simultaneously, we aimed at sustaining the stability of viscosity
