General description

Vitamin C is called as ascorbate in the protonated form and as ascorbic acid in neutral state. Vitamin C is synthesized in plants, animals and birds. However, it is not synthesized in mammals and exists as ascorbate.

Application

L-Ascorbic acid has been used in extraction buffer for the isolation of α-tocopherol and β-carotene in napier grass silage and oat silage prior to saponification.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and is reversibly oxidized to dehydroascorbate via an ascorbyl radical intermediate. Vitamin C mediates the synthesis of tryptophan, tyrosine and folic acid as well as collagen and neurotransmitters. It also coordinates metabolism of tyrosine, folic acid and tryptophan, hydroxylation of glycine, proline, lysine carnitine and catecholamine. Vitamin C promotes wound healing, repair and iron absorption. It is a safe anti-pigmenting compound supplement in skin care cosmetics for effective reduction of UV induced pigmentation. Vitamin C is regarded as an effective skin protection agent with anti-aging functionality. Vitamin C deficiency is implicated in scurvy, a haemorrhagic disease. Supplementation with vitamin C prevents scurvy. Vitamin C also helps in treating common cold.
