General description

Application

This USP reference standard is intended for use in specified quality tests and assays as specified in the USP compendia.
It is also used to prepare standard solution for cholesterol assay and system suitability solution for the detection of impurities in cholesterol samples using gas chromatography (GC) coupled to flame ionization detector (FID) in accordance with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monograph “Cholesterol”.
In addition, it is used in the detection of cholesterol impurity in omega-3 free fatty acids to prepare a standard stock solution in n-hexane for analysis by GC-FID, following USP monograph “Omega-3 Free Fatty Acids”.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Major component of all biological membranes; ~25% of total brain lipid is cholesterol.
