General description
Human Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a 660 kDa, dimeric protein produced by and used entirely within the thyroid gland. Human Thyroglobin is used by the thyroid gland to produce the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyryonine. Patients with Hashimoto′s thyroiditis or Grave′s disease, frequently develop antibodies against human Thyroglobulin.

Thryoglobulin levels in the blood can be used as a tumor marker for certain kinds of thyroid cancer and in Graves′ disease.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Thyroglobulin has been shown to induce expression of platelet activating factor in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells which is found elevated in some patients with thyroid disease.

The thyroglobulin (TG) protein is essential to thyroid hormone synthesis, plays a vital role in the regulation of metabolism, development and growth and serves as intraglandular iodine storage. Its architecture is conserved among vertebrates. Synthesis of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine

Platelet activating factor (PAF), a phospholipid mediator, has been found to play a role in immune reactions, as well as in many pathophysiological alterations in certain disorders. To determine whether there might be a potential role of PAF in the

Thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement is a major tool for the follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients; however, in patients who do not undergo radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation, normal ultrasensitive Tg levels measured under levothyroxine treatment (usTg/l-T4) are not well defined.

Placental transport of iodide is required for fetal thyroid hormone production. The sodium iodide symporter (NIS) mediates active iodide transport into the thyroid and the lactating mammary gland and is also present in placenta. NIS is competitively inhibited by thiocyanate

Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT), now considered the most common autoimmune disease, was described over a century ago as a pronounced lymphoid goiter affecting predominantly women. In addition to this classic form, several other clinico-pathologic entities are now included under the term
