Gene Information
human ... ENO1(2023)
General description
α-Enolase is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 1p36.3-p36.2.
α-Enolase, also known as Enolase 1, is one of three enolase isoenzymes and a glycolytic enzyme expressed in most tissues. It is predominantly expressed in the early stages of embryonic development. The enzyme consists of two subunits of 433 amino-acids each. Each subunit has a molar mass of 47kDa. The dimer is stabilized in the presence of magnesium.
Application
α-Enolase human has been used in in vitro kinase activity assay.
Biochem/physiol Actions
α-Enolase catalyzes the dehydration of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate. This protein plays a key role in anaerobic metabolism under hypoxic conditions and may act as a cell surface plasminogen receptor during tissue invasion. Abnormal expression of α-enolase is associated with tumor progression in some cases of breast and lung cancer. It also has been identified as an auto antigen associated with Hashimoto′s encephalopathy and severe asthma.

A possible involvement of autoimmune mechanism in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma has been proposed. Recently, alpha-enolase protein was identified as a major autoantigen recognized by circulating IgG autoantibodies in patients with severe asthma. To evaluate a possible pathogenetic significance
