General description

Saccharin is an artificial sweetener, which is used in canned fruit juices, vegetables, cookies and jellies. It is associated with bladder cancer.

Application

Saccharin sodium salt hydrate has been used to eliminate the potentially confounding effect of caloric content. It has also been used to study its effects on the cyclamate-responsive taste 2 receptor member 1 (TAS2R1) receptor.

Biochem/physiol Actions

′First generation′ synthetic sugar alternative that has been studied for its carcinogenic potential.
