Gene Information

rabbit ... Vimentin(7431)

General description

Vimentin is a specific type III intermediate filament (IF) protein. It is abundantly expressed in mesenchymal cells. The gene encoding this protein is localized on human chromosome 10p13.

Immunogen

The epitope recognized by PLA0199 maps to a region between residue 416 and 466 of human vimentin using the numbering given in entry NP_003371.2 (GeneID 7431).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Vimentin helps to preserve the structure of cell and stability of tissue in mesenchymal cells. It is involved in tumorigenesis, EMT (epithelial mesenchymal transition) and the metastatic spread of cancer. It also controls infectious internalization of human papillomavirus 16 pseudovirions.

Physical form

Tris-buffered Saline containing 0.1% BSA containing 0.09% Sodium Azide

Other Notes

Vimentin is an intermediate filament expressed mainly in mesenchymal tissue and in primitive (undifferentiated) non-mesenchymal cells. It is a Class III cytoplasmic filament that forms a dense cytoskeletal network that extends from the nucleus to the plasma membrane. Vimentin reorganization during mitosis is likely regulated via its multiple phosphorylation sites. Vimentin expression is also found in mesoderm derived epithelia. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with anti-vimentin antibodies is often used to identify neoplasms of mesenchymal or mesodermal origin.

Vimentin, a major constituent of the intermediate filament family of proteins, is ubiquitously expressed in normal mesenchymal cells and is known to maintain cellular integrity and provide resistance against stress. Vimentin is overexpressed in various epithelial cancers, including prostate cancer
