Protamine sulfate salt from salmon has been used in the generation of protamine silica nanocomposites.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Protamine sulfate is a small cationic protein that binds and precipitates DNA. Neutralizes the anticoagulant activity of heparin. Inhibits lipoprotein lipase.
Protamine sulfate is highly preferred in cardiovascular surgical procedures to reverse the anticoagulant properties of heparin. It is used for biomedical and biotechnological applications due to its biodegradablity.
General description
Protamine sulfate (PS), a polycationic, positively charged protein is mostly made up of poly(l-arginine). It is obtained from salmon sperm protein.
