General description

Monoamine Oxidase B is a mitochondrial outermembrane flavoenzyme that is a target for antidepressant and neuroprotective drugs.

Application

Drugs that inhibit monoamine oxidase B activity are used for the treatment of various neurological disorders including depression.
Monoamine Oxidase B has been used in a study to assess the effect of age in 23 different regions of the human brain. It has also been used in a study to determine the specific locations of monoamine oxidase in the human brain.

Biochem/physiol Actions

MAO′s are proteins of the mitochondrial membrane. These enzymes are responsible for catalyzing oxidative deamination of endo- and xenobiotic amines. Substrate specificity differs for each isozyme.

Unit Definition

kynuramine deamination activity: One unit will deaminate 1 nanomole of kynuramine per minute at pH 7.4 at 37 deg C.
