General description

Cholesterol is a lipid molecule,[1] found integrated to the cell membrane.[2]

Application

Lipids Cholesterol Rich from adult bovine serum has been used as one of the lipid component to generate erythroblasts ex vivo.[3] It has also been used as a standard to determine muscle cholesterol level, spectrophotometrically.[4][5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cholesterol significantly affects the property of phospholipid membrane such as fluidity and membrane protein function.[6] It exhibits a condensing effect towards phospholipids.[1] Cholesterol-phospholipid interaction influences physiological properties of a lipid bilayer.[7] Cholesterol serves as a precursor of bile acids, steroid hormones and vitamin D. Uncontrolled level of plasma cholesterol might lead to the risk of cardiovascular disorder.[8]
