General description

NTRK2 (neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 2) gene is mapped to human chromosome 9q22.1 and spans a length of 353kb. It consists of 21 exons that are arranged in six different blocks. This protein is composed of the promoter region, the extracellular domain and the juxtamembrane region, intracellular juxtamembane domain, followed by the tyrosine kinsase domain. The C-terminus of the tyrosine kinase domain and a γ phospholipase C binding site are encoded by exons 20 and 21.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

NTRK2 (neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 2) gene encodes a membrane-bound receptor belonging to the neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) family. It undergoes autophosphorylation on binding to neurotrophin and phosphorylates the members of MAPK pathway. NTRK2 is expressed in hypothalamic neurons that are involved in the control of food intake and energy expenditure. Polymorphism in this gene is linked to eating disorders leading to obesity. It regulates short- and long-term synaptic function and neural plasticity along with its ligand brain-derived neurotropic factor. Alterations in this gene can cause major depressive disorder (MDD).
