Gene Information

human ... MFGE8(4240)

General description

MFGE8 (milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein) is a ~53kDa plasma membrane glycoprotein that is generated at the bud from the apical surface of mammary epithelial cells during lactation. It is composed of two specific functional domains: an N-terminal domain with two epidermal growth factor (EGF) repeats and a C-terminal domain with two Discoidin/F5/8C domains for binding of anionic phospholipids and/or extracellular matrices.
MFGE8 is mapped to human chromosome 15q26.1.

Application

Anti-MFGE8 antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunofluorescence.
Anti-MFGE8 antibody produced in rabbit, a Prestige Antibody, is developed and validated by the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project . Each antibody is tested by immunohistochemistry against hundreds of normal and disease tissues. These images can be viewed on the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) site by clicking on the Image Gallery link. The antibodies are also tested using immunofluorescence and western blotting. To view these protocols and other useful information about Prestige Antibodies and the HPA, visit sigma.com/prestige.

Biochem/physiol Actions

MFGE8 (milk fat globule-EGF factor 8) protein is involved in wide range of cellular interactions such as phagocytosis of apoptotic lymphocytes and other apoptotic cells, cell adhesion of sperm and the egg coat, intestinal mucosa repair, mammary gland branching morphogenesis, angiogenesis etc. It is potentially involved in different stages of sperm maturation and fertilization mechanism. It accelerates the engulfment of apoptotic carcinoma cells by living carcinoma cells which in turn promotes tumor growth.

Features and Benefits

Prestige Antibodies® are highly characterized and extensively validated antibodies with the added benefit of all available characterization data for each target being accessible via the Human Protein Atlas portal linked just below the product name at the top of this page. The uniqueness and low cross-reactivity of the Prestige Antibodies® to other proteins are due to a thorough selection of antigen regions, affinity purification, and stringent selection. Prestige antigen controls are available for every corresponding Prestige Antibody and can be found in the linkage section.

Every Prestige Antibody is tested in the following ways:
  • IHC tissue array of 44 normal human tissues and 20 of the most common cancer type tissues.
  • Protein array of 364 human recombinant protein fragments.
