MASP1 (mannan-binding lectin serine peptidase 1) gene encodes a serine protease that is involved in the activation of MASP2 or C2 or directly C3, the key component of complement pathway. This pathway functions in the innate and adaptive immune response. The encoded protein is a zymogen that is activated upon association with pathogen recognition molecules of lectin pathway, the mannose-binding lectin and the ficolins.
