Biochem/physiol Actions

Haptoglobin (abbreviated as Hp) is the protein encoded by the HP gene in humans. It is an "acute phase" protein that has different functions displaying genetic polymorphism and has are 3 major phenotypes. Haptoglobin is capable of binding haemoglobin, there by preventing iron loss and renal damage. The complex of haptoglobin with haemoglobin is metabolized in the heptic reticuloendothelial system and it occurs in the liver, adipose tissue and in lung. It acts as an antioxidant and has antibacterial activity. Haptoglobin plays an important role in modulating many aspects of the acute phase response.
