General description
Ghrelin is a gastric acyl-peptide or an orexigenic digestive hormone. It is synthesized by the ghrelin producing cells in the gastric oxyntic mucosa. GHRL gene is mapped to human chromosome 3p25-p26.
Application
Ghrelin human has been used to study the influence of leptin and ghrelin on secretory function of equine corpus luteum (CL) in vitro.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ghrelin participates in cell proliferation. It plays a major role in sleep and memory. Ghrelin is also associated with depression, especially for particular endophenotypes. It promotes growth hormone (GH) release in central nervous system.
Endogenous ligand to the orphan growth-hormone secretagogue receptor that stimulates the release of growth hormone from the pituitary.
