Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucagon is a 29-amino acid pancreas secreted peptide hormone that raises blood glucose and insulin levels. Glucagon acts via a G protein-coupled glucagon receptor. The glucagon GPCR induces an adenylate cyclase:protein kinase A:phosphorylase kinase:glycogen phosphorylase-A signaling pathway that results in the release of glucose-1-phosphate from glycogen.

In chicks, plus defocus retards eye growth, thickens the choroid, and activates glucagonergic amacrine cells, probably releasing glucagon. Glucagon receptor antagonists (expected to inhibit compensation to plus defocus) and agonists (expected to block myopia induction by form deprivation) were administered

Hyperglucagonaemia is a characteristic of several clinical conditions (e.g. end-stage renal disease (ESRD), type 2 diabetes, obesity before and after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vagotomy with pyloroplasty), but the molecular nature of 'immunoreactive' glucagon is poorly characterised. The specific

Asprosin is a fasting-induced hormone that promotes glucose production in the liver and stimulates appetite in the hypothalamus by activating the cAMP signaling pathway via an unknown G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). However, the bona fide receptor of Asprosin is unclear.
