General description
Cholesterol is one of the important constituent of all membranes. It is made up of a hydrophobic, planar, a polar hydroxyl group, fused-ring nucleus and a short hydrocarbon tail.
Application
Cholesterol-PEG 600 has been used to evaluate its ability to induce apoptosis in vascular smooth muscle cells. It has also been used to restore cholesterol following depletion by methyl β-cyclodextrin.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Cholesterol acts as an antecedent of steroid hormones. It plays a key role in fetal growth and in brain development.
