General description

Albumin is the most abundant plasma protein in human. It has a molecular weight of 66.5 kDa.

Application

Albumin from human serum has been used:
  • as a carrier of CPT-11 (irinotecan, Campto) and SN-38 to investigate its binding to human plasma proteins
  • to study the adsorption of water and acetonitrile (AN) vapor on a human serum albumin
  • to study its effect on wound healing process

Biochem/physiol Actions

Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones, and is vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood. Albumin is also seen to bind to exogenous substances, particularly drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, warfarin), and strongly influence their pharmacokinetics. Oxidative stress leading to changes in the redox state of albumin has widely varied effects on its physiological function.
Serum albumin primarily mediates divalent cation transportation, fatty acid and drug complex formation and transport. The albumin levels in the serum indicate the disease progression in advanced liver disease. Low body weight and decreased serum albumin is associated with colorectal cancer.

Preterm infants are highly susceptible to lung injury. While both chorioamnionitis and antenatal steroids induce lung maturation, chorioamnionitis is also associated with adverse lung development. We investigated the ability of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from ventilated preterm infants to restore

Equilibrium dialysis, ultrafiltration, and ultracentrifugation were compared to determine their reliability and applicability in the study of binding of an anticonvulsant drug, valproic acid, by plasma proteins. We studied drug binding with pooled serum and with solutions of human serum

Historically, sunlight has seemed to fortify antituberculosis resistance. Evidence is presented here suggesting a role for vitamin D in this effect. The active metabolite of this photosynthesized vitamin, 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 (1,25D), promotes maturation and activation of human monocytes and macrophages
