General description

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an organic sodium salt used as both a detergent and a protein denaturant in biochemical research. Its unique structure includes a long-chain aliphatic group with a negatively charged sulfate, making it an effective agent for denaturing proteins. This property is especially valuable in electrophoresis, a technique used to separate and analyze macromolecules like proteins. SDS, with its negative charge, interacts with proteins and lipids to create micellar structures, aiding in solubilizing and stabilizing these biomolecules.

Application

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been used:
  • as a negatively charged surfactant to study its effects on filtration flux and membrane fouling during the microfiltration of the surfactant-stabilized oil emulsion
  • as a component of plant extraction buffer, and transferring buffer for western blot
  • as a component of 5× Laemmli sample buffer (5× LB) and 10× SDS running buffer for sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblot

Anionic detergent

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) effectively binds to the positively charged and the hydrophobic residues of proteins via sulfate groups and alkyl chains. It functions as a vital detergent in the domain of structural biology and protein folding/unfolding studies. SDS can stimulate the creation of α-helices in a protein structure. It has the ability to promote cooperative unfolding in several proteins including bovine serum albumin (BSA), β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin, and hen egg-white lysozyme structures at elevated concentrations.

Features and Benefits

  • Tested to confirm low levels of heavy metal contamination, ensuring suitability for various applications
  • Tested for trace levels of Anions and Cations
  • High-purity product ideal for biochemical research purposes
