General description

Chemical structure: peptide

Application

Gramicidin is a naturally occuring polypeptide antibiotic. It functions as a transmembrane ion channel and is used for studies on phospholipid bilayer membrane fluidity measured by lateral diffusion.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Gramicidin′s bactericidal activity is a result of increasing the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane. This allows inorganic monovalent cations to travel through unrestricted which thereby destroys the ion gradient between the cytoplasm and the extracellular environment .
Naturally occuring polypeptide antibiotic with Tyr at position 11; functions as a transmembrane ion channel.

This study examined the expression and function of inward rectifier K(+) channels in cultured rat hepatic stellate cells (HSC). The expression of inward rectifier K(+) channels was measured using real-time RT-PCR, and electrophysiological properties were determined using the gramicidin-perforated patch-clamp
