General description

E-cadherin is a transmembrane protein that is involved in cell adhesion through the formationof adherens junctions between cells. It is expressed in cells of epithelial lineage. Anti-E-cadherin stains positively in the glandular epithelium as well as carcinomas of the gastrointestinaltract and breast. E-cadherin immunohistochemistry may also aid in the differentiation ofbreast ductal carcinomas (with membranous stain) from lobular carcinomas (with loss of themembranous stain).

Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma is a recently described entity separated from classical lobular carcinoma by cytologic pleomorphism. It can have an aggressive clinical course with a higher frequency of recurrence. Histologic differentiation with ductal carcinoma may be difficult, but it is

Cancer, 87(2), 83-86 (1999-05-05)
Cadherins are a family of cell-cell adhesion proteins. The homotypic binding of cadherins is critical for cell sorting and tissue formation during organogenesis. Different cadherin subtypes show lineage specific tissue expression, which has been exploited to differentiate histologically similar tumors

We studied the pattern of E-cadherin expression in 183 invasive carcinomas (100 ductal, 42 lobular, 41 with mixed ductal and lobular features) and 198 in situ carcinomas (131 ductal, 53 lobular, 14 in situ with ductal and lobular features) by

The distinction between reactive mesothelial cells (RMC), malignant mesothelioma (MM), and metastatic adenocarcinoma (ACA) in pleural effusions may be impossible based on morphology alone. E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and calretinin are newly described immunocytochemical markers which can potentially be utilized for facilitating

Human pathology, 28(6), 641-645 (1997-06-01)
The differential diagnosis of pleural mesotheliomas and lung adenocarcinomas presents a continued challenge in the practice of surgical pathology. Paraffin immunohistochemistry (IHC) using different panels of antibodies can be helpful in some cases, but, as yet, no antigen is expressed
