General description

Prolactin (PRL) is a single-chain polypeptide of 226 amino acids with a molecular weight of about 24 kD. Prolactin plays a role in multiple processes including cell growth, reproduction, and immune function.1 The pituitary hormone PRL is involved in tumorigenesis in rodents and humans. PRL promotes proliferation, survival, and migration of cancer cells acting via the PRL receptor.5 Anti-prolactin is a useful marker in classification of pituitary tumors and the study of pituitary disease as it reacts with prolactin-producing cells.2-4 Such prolactin-producing cells can also be found in prostate epithelium.5

Sixty adult human pituitary glands taken at autopsy were stained for prolactin using the immunoperoxidase technique, and percentages of prolactin-bearing cells were assessed. There was no difference between the percentages of prolactin cells seen in the adenohypophyses of adult men

Prolactinomas invading the skull base are rare, and could easily be confused with skull base tumors of nonpituitary origin. We report a series of 4 cases of giant prolactinomas invading the skull base and presenting with atypical symptoms. Case 1

Prolactin is widely expressed in different tissues, and it is presumed to have both local and systemic actions. In males it is known to influence reproductive functions but the significance and mechanisms of prolactin action in male accessory reproductive tissues

Malignant prolactinomas are rare events. To date, only 14 patients with metastases in- or outside the central nervous system have been reported. We present a patient who developed a metastasis to the cauda equina, which is the first case documented

Among 92 surgically removed pituitary adenomas immunostained for prolactin and growth hormone, 70 showed positive staining for prolactin. The majority of these (54) was associated with hyperprolactinemia leading to amenorrhea (and often galactorrhea) in women of reproductive age. Similar tumors
