General description

Potassium nitrate is a water-soluble inorganic salt that is commonly used as nitrogen fertilizer. It is also found in toothpastes as a desensitizer for tooth hypersensitivity. The addition of KNO3 to growth medium has shown to promote growth in salt stressed melon plants.

Application

Potassium nitrate may be used in the synthesis of 5-bromo-8-nitroisoquinoline via bromination of isoquinoline using N-bromosuccinimide.

Direct current (DC) stimulation can be used to influence the orientation and migratory behavior of cells and results in cellular electrotaxis. Experimental work on such phenomena commonly relies on electrochemical dissolution of silver:silver-chloride (Ag:AgCl) electrodes to provide the stimulation via
