General description

Sodium metabisulfite (MBS, Sodium disulfite) is the sodium salt of disulphurous (pyrosulfurous) acid. It is also commonly added to various food products and wines as a preservative.

Application

Sodium metabisulfite may be used to initiate the cross-linking of polybutadiene by free radical polymerization. It may be used to prevent the oxidation (as antioxidant) during the preparation of stock solutions of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and 6-OHDA HBr in various studies.

Sodium metabisulfite is used in marine shrimp harvesting to prevent the occurrence of black spots. Shrimps are soaked in a sodium metabisulfite solution in ice, which is disposed of in sewages that run into marine canals, creating an environmental hazard.
