General description

Titanium dioxide (TiO2, titania) is one of the most important materials having various important applications, such as water and air purification, self-cleaning materials and photovoltaic cells. TiO2 is an n-type semiconductor having a wide band gap (3.2eV for anatase and 3.0eV for rutile). Deposition of thin films of TiO2 doped with Mn on F-doped SnO2-coated glass by spin coating has been described. Deposition of thin films of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on various substrates by a simple sol-gel dip coating technique has been proposed. It has various photocatalytic applications where it can be used in two forms, i.e as highly dispersed fine particles on porous support materials and as suspended fluids in liquid medium.

Application

Titanium (IV) oxide may be used as a photocatalyst material, due to its ability to absorb solar energy and light induced reactivity with water and hence it finds applications in environmental photocatalytic water purification. Titanium (IV) oxide nanomaterials, which are found to be biocompatible and environment friendly, may find applications in optical biosensors.
