General description

Mueller Hinton Broth 2 is recommended for testing the most encountered aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria found in food and clinical material for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The medium shows good batch-to-batch reproducibility. It is low in sulfonamide, trimethoprim, and tetracycline inhibitors and yields satisfactory growth of most non-fastidious pathogens.Casein acid hydrolysate and beef extract provide amino acids and other nitrogenous substances, minerals, vitamins, and carbon to support the growth of microorganisms. To determine the MIC values with Enterococcus faecalis and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, a special low content of thymine and thymidine in the amino acid sources is required. Starch neutralizes toxic substances that may be present in the medium and have an inhibitory effect on antibiotics and the growth of organisms. During autoclaving, a small amount of dextrose is hydrolyzed from starch, which is a source of energy. Calcium and magnesium salts are added to adjust the ion concentrations of the medium.

Application

Mueller Hinton Broth 2 cation adjusted is intended for use in quantitative procedures for susceptibility testing of rapidly growing aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria isolated from clinical specimens. It has been used for culturing Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and in the serial dilution of doxycycline.

Features and Benefits

NutriSelect® Plus are powdered culture media offering
  • Quality control with growth promotion test according to industry standards
  • Quality assurance acc. to ISO 9001
  • Cost-efficient powdered media

Preparation Note

Suspend 22 g in 1000 ml distilled water. Heat if necessary to dissolve the medium completely. Dispense and sterilize by autoclaving at 10-15 lbs pressure (115-121°C) for 10 minutes. DO NOT OVERHEAT. Mix well before pouring.
Note: This medium is supplemented with appropriate salts to provide 20-25 mg/l of calcium and 10-12.5 mg/l of magnesium and as additionally required to suit performance parameters.

Footnote

We offer two media types: the superior granulated GranuCult® and the cost-efficient powdered NutriSelect® culture media, depending on your needs.
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.

While the infection rate of orthopedic implants is low, the required treatment, which can involve six weeks of antibiotic therapy and two additional surgical operations, is life threatening and expensive, and thus motivates the development of a one-stage re-implantation procedure.
