Methyl red (C.I. 13020) is also known as acid red 2. The hydrochloride form is slightly soluble in water and ethanol.

Application

Methyl red is widely used in food science and applied & pure biology. It is added in media while preparing agar plates for microbiology. It is used as a vital stain for protozoa. Methyl red is also utilized as a tracer for assessing penetration of foods into packaging and as a component of an indicator to examine pork quality. It has been used to study the ability of earthworms to modify their environmental pH.
