General description

PI is used for selective labelling of dead cells.[1]
Propidium iodide is a fluorescent intercalating agent used for staining.[2] It functions as an apoptosis marker[3] and has linear DNA-binding capacity.[4] Propidium iodide is an effective indicator of tissue injury.[5]

Application

Propidium iodide has been used:
  • to stain DNA in cell cycle analysis[6]
  • to stain cells[7] and cell nuclei[8][9]
  • for the preparation of propidium iodide (PI)stock solution[10]
  • to stain cells for flow cytometry[11][12]

in scrape-loading dye transfer assay[13]
