Methomyl is a broad-spectrum insecticide that belongs to the family of oxime carbamate pesticides. It controls insects and nematode pests by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and preventing the hydrolysis of neurotransmitter acetylcholine.(1)
Methomyl has to be monitored in the Multiannual Control Programme for Pesticides Residues (MACP), run within the EU and EFTA in/on products of plant origin
As per Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, repealing the directive 91/414, methomyl is not approved for use in the European Union (EU). A maximum residue limit (MRL) of 0.01 mg/kg is applicable for its presence in most of the commodities with an MRL of 0.2 mg/kg particularly for lettuce and cotton seeds, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/1822.
Application
The methomyl CRM may also find the following uses:
- Detection of methomyl in food matrices (wheat and rice flours) using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS)
- Degradation of methomyl with intensifying agents such as hydrogen peroxide, Fenton reagent, and ozone by using hydrodynamic cavitation reactor (HC)
- Degradation of methomyl by using the ultrasound cavitation (US) in combination with hydrogen peroxide, Fenton, and photo-Fenton process
- Determination of methomyl using a bare boron-doped diamond electrode by voltammetric methods
- Degradation of methomyl by the combination of Aminobacter sp. MDW-2 and Afipia sp. MDW-3
