General description

Ox-bileis a dehydrated, purified fresh bile which is used as a selective inhibitory agent in bile media. Ox-bile desiccated is prepared by a low temperature dehydration process which ensures a uniform product and eliminates the difficulties encountered in obtaining satisfactory supplies of fresh bile. An 8 to 10% solution of the dehydrated product is equivalent to fresh bile. 1 gram of dried Ox Bile is equivalent to 8 grams of fresh bile.

Application

Ox bile is used as a selective agent in culture media for selective growth of intestinal bacteria like E. coli, other feacal coliforms, feacal streptococci. But it is also used as a selective agent in media for detection of Yersinia enterocolitica, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio species. Bile salts may be used as one of the selective agents to prevent the growth of injured Escherichia coli cells, in an experiment done to identify the specific agent in the selective media which would inhibit the growth of the injured Escherichia coli ML30 cells. It may also be used for identification of isolates of Vibrio vulnificus (Beneckea) which is a halophilic bacterium, found responsible for causing several human infections.
